The Lion King 20th Anniversary

Description

NOTE: I also put a music video together in tribute to this movie and all the amazingly talented people that worked on it because I'm just THAT crazy, please watch: www.youtube.com/watch?v=nXxdCU…

A day late, well crap. I tried given the time I had to work with (plus I've been sick, go figure) But anyway! On June 15th 1994 the best movie of all time first hit theaters (wide release was on June 24th, so technically I'm not really late...yay!) I was nine years old when The Lion King came out and it forever changed my life. I became instantly obsessed; in fact that summer I had "contests" with a friend of mine (who was also an addict) on who could see the movie more in a week. Her mother actually tricked us into seeing another movie once because she was concerned we were "too obsessed" ... and during said movie I snuck out to go catch a little LK in the next theater ... shit, maybe she was right XD

While I'm far from being anywhere near "professional" I have had a deep passion for drawing since I could hold a pencil and this movie REALLY inspired me like nothing else EVER has. To this very day it still inspires me, both with fan art devoted to my favorite characters and the motivation to pursue my dreams and dabble in character creation, stories and even (poor) attempts at animation. I could ramble about the tragedy of everything being CGI these days and how desperate I am to see a return to traditional hand-drawn animation, but that's a rant for another day. In short TLK is responsible for giving me a huge creative push and there are no words for how much that means to me. I have an insane amount of respect for every artist and animator that worked on this movie.

Fast forward 20 years (has it really been that long? I mean, really? It doesn't feel like it...) and this is still my favorite movie, ever. It still makes me laugh and brings me to tears...and I still get chills every time. As an adult I came to appreciate and understand the characters on a whole new level - there are many reasons why Scar is my favorite but I'm sure I've rambled about that before. I will say this: the unknown, but no doubt very interesting, past of Mufasa and Scar is a favorite among the fandom and many creative people have taken their own spin on it. Exploring the characters and lore of the LK universe is one of the best things about it.

So you've seen the sketches posted over the last several days but here is my little tribute. It didn't come out exactly has I had planned but then nothing ever does. I kept that "messy sketchy" look because I absolutely LOVE concept art and wanted that kind of feel for this. Please see the links at the bottom if you want to see each individual colored picture.

This story and these characters will live in my heart forever.

:iconthelionkingplz: Happy Anniversary Lion King! Thank you for 20 years of magic! :iconthelionkingplz:
